Love modern art and good food?
Choose one of the new Alitalia flights to Bilbao, the largest city of the Basque Country, a real treat for the eyes and palate.
A good starting point for a visit of Bilbao, offering a taste of all the city has to offer, is the Guggenheim Museum, designed by Frank O. Gehry; the building, with its 24.000 square meters of curves and interconnected shapes in stone, glass and titanium, constitutes a wonder for both citizens and tourists.
Strolling along the Nervión river, you can continue to experience the innovative character of Bilbao, by coming across buildings which are extraordinary open air sculptures: the harp-shaped Zubizuri or White Bridge, with its deck consisting of translucent glass bricks, by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, who also designed the new airport terminal; the “fosteritos”, distinctive and sinuous glass and steel structures which provide access to the metro stations, affectionately named after the architect who designed them, Norman Foster; the Alhóndiga Bilbao, a former wine and liquor red brick warehouse, renovated by the renowned French designer Philippe Starck and turned into a public sports and culture center; the Iberdrola Tower, a massive skyscraper designed by the Argentinian architect Cesar Pelli; the Euskalduna Conference Center and Concert Hall, by the architects Soriano and Palacios, home of the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra.
In contrast with the futuristic Bilbao, the Casco Viejo, the fascinating old town, with its countless characteristic and charming corners, such as the Mercado de la Ribera, the largest market in Europe, and the pelota court (frontón), where you can watch a pelota match, national sport of the Basque Country.
After enjoying the city’s beauties, take a break with a taste of pintxos, Bilbao’s meat, fish or vegetable tapas, accompanied by a glass of txacolí, the white wine typical of this region.
And if you are looking for late night entertainment, visit Bilbao during the third week of August, during the Semana Grande, offering a rich program of concerts, folkloristic and gastronomic events.
The ingredients for a trip filled with culture and entertainment are all there: book now your Alitalia ticket to Bilbao.
