Una mascheraMasked parades, exhibitions and workshops, concerts and theatrical performances: welcome to Venice for the most colorful spectacle of the year.

As always, thousands of curious visitors and tourists from across the world will come to the calli (streets), canals andsquares to admire the magic evoked by the allegorical costumes and historical masks of the Venice Carnival, the most irreverent, famous and popular carnival in Italy.

This year "Fantastic nature" will be the main themeof the event, focusing on the wonderful world of nature, for which La Serenissima is an excellent setting.
During the Carnival, Venice will be transformed into even more of a fairy-tale city, taking visitors on a journey of discovery into a fantastical world, inspired by traditional European fairy tales, Arab tales and all those stories that have made the history and traditions of countries across the world.

The Carnival in the Lagoon starts on February 15, immediately after the Prologue of St. Valentine's Day on February 14, with the Venetian Celebration on the Water in the Cannaregio district, where the first fantastical Carnival creatures will make their entrance.
On Sunday February 16 it will be the turn of the masked Corteo Acqueo water parade of colorful rowing boats, which will make its way from the Punta della Dogana along the Grand Canal to Cannaregio, where you can tuck into cicheti, fritole and galani, the traditional Venetian specialties.
On Saturday February 22, the Festa delle Marie will be held in the splendid setting of Piazza San Marco, with parades of standard bearers, musicians and maids of honor, and the start of the Most Beautiful Mask competition. Both these events will come to a conclusion on March 4, Shrove Tuesday, with the award ceremony for the winning "Maria" of Carnival 2014 and for the Most Beautiful Mask.
The Angel's Flight, scheduled for February 23, will be the icing on the cake: at midday, as per tradition, the winning Maria from Carnival 2013 will "fly" down from the top of the San Marco Campanile to the center of the Piazza, to pay the traditional homage to the Doge, welcomed with emotion, amazement and applause by the public.

Throughout the Venice Carnival period, there will be opportunities to attend the operas "La Traviata" and "The Barber of Seville", in the splendid location of the La Fenice Theater, and a performance of"The Rite of Spring", in the Sale Apollinee at the theater.
Don't miss the special projects that will take place in the unique setting of the old Venetian palazzi, including a performance of "Women in Love, or Shakespeare's Women" at Palazzo Mocenigo and the exhibition "Temi & Variazioni. L'impero della Luce" (Themes & Variations. The Empire of Light) at Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, the home of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection.
