Athens Flights

The home of philosophers, scholars and artists of every kind and from every era, Athens, the capital of Greece, welcomes tourists from all corners of the world.

The story of the Greek capital starts with a myth, the challenge of who, between Athena and Poseidon, the two main gods of Attica, could offer the most useful gift to the people. At the end of this challenge, Athena became the protector of the city that today bears her name.

Historical Athens also saw the philosophers Socrates, Plato and Aristotle enliven the cultural life of the city, which peaked with the birth of theater. The tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides and the satiric and comic works of Aristophanes and Menander are immortal and still provide the basis for modern western theater.

Athens also means fresh vitality and continual movement behind the harmony of the past. It is a city of change, that reinvents itself day by day.

A trip to Athens has to start at the Acropolis, the apotheosis of Greek beauty and a universal symbol of the classical spirit, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. At the entrance to this famous archaeological site, where the Athenian passion for art is clearly visible, are the monumental Propylaea and, nearby, the Temple of Athena Nike, attributed to Callicrates. Moving on, you get to the Parthenon, testimony to one of the most fortunate encounters in history, that of Pericles and Phidias. Further on you can admire the Erechtheion, with its typical porch of the Caryatids.

Below the Acropolis, the Odeon of Herode Atticus, further on the Theater of Dionysus and, nearby, the imposing Temple of Zeus Olympia are places suspended between reality and fantasy. On the remains of the Agora, the square that hosted markets and events of every kind, stand the Temple of Hephaestus and the reconstruction of the Stoa of Attalos, which now houses the Museum of the Agora. Do not miss the National Archaeological Museum, the biggest and richest in Europe, where you can lose yourself among the treasures of the ancient Greek civilization.

To take in the full flavor of the city, take a walk through the Plaka, the oldest and best-known district of Athens, where you can listen to bouzouki, dance the sirtaki and drink a nice glass of ouzo, a traditional Greek liqueur, accompanied by tasty pita gyros, for lovers of street food, or mezedes, the traditional and extremely tasty local snacks, for those who don't want to give up their aperitif.

Thanks to the Port of Piraeus, Athens is also the starting point for discovering the natural beauty of the main Greek islands, which have always been among Europe's most popular destinations, famous for turquoise sea, romantic sunsets and Mediterranean scents, ideal for any type of vacation, from the more exotic and adventurous to the more chic and fun.

Every corner of the Greek capital provides a different and thrilling viewpoint. Fly to Athens with Alitalia and kαλό ταξίδι (“Have a good trip”)!
